Exploring the Untamed Wonders of Big Sur
Big Sur is known for its towering cliffs that drop steeply into the Pacific Ocean. These cliffs create dramatic, uninterrupted views of the vast blue expanse of water. The contrast between the rugged coastline and the serene ocean is genuinely striking.
Big Sur is a place to disconnect from the chaos and reconnect with nature. The sound of the crashing waves, the smell of the salty sea air, and the vast, open landscape create a sense of peacefulness and awe. Cruising down Highway 1 and taking in the mix of rugged cliffs, redwood forests, and stunning ocean views was the perfect way to start the day.
This stretch of California’s Highway 1 is considered one of the most scenic drives in the world. The road hugs the cliffs, and riders are treated to sweeping vistas around every curve. The winding road adds to the adventure, offering new perspectives of the coastline at each turn.
Starting the Day: Breakfast at From Scratch
Our journey along California’s famous Highway 1 kicked off early in Morgan Hill, where the engine’s roar undoubtedly roused our neighbors from their slumber! With excitement in the air, we set off toward Carmel. As the sun rose, it painted a gentle glow over the rolling hills while we glided along peaceful country roads, savoring the freedom a motorcycle ride can provide.
I have wanted to visit Carmel since I read my first Danielle Steel novel many years ago. I used to imagine what it would be like to live in such an amazing, beautiful place. To finally see it in person was a dream come true!
By the time we reached Carmel, we were ready for a break, and From Scratch was the perfect spot to refuel with coffee and a tasty breakfast. The restaurant has been a local family tradition since 1977. It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives with Guy Fieri! Their menu is filled with farm-to-table options, and they’re especially loved for their Biscuits & Gravy and Eggs Benedict. I had the Turkey and Avocado Eggs Benedict, and it was delicious!
With breakfast behind us, we geared up for the next leg—the unforgettable ride down Highway 1 to Big Sur. With its towering cliffs and sweeping views of the Pacific, this stretch of road is not just a ride but a soul-stirring experience. Every twist and turn brings new awe and a sense of adventure.
Monterey Beach
After finishing our delicious breakfast, the salty tang of the ocean air greeted us as we set off to see the California coastline. Carmel is located on the Monterey Peninsula, a picturesque piece of coastline worthy of the many postcards it inspires. I have wanted to visit this area since I read my first Danielle Steel novel, so this is like a dream come true!
We made it a few miles to Monterey Beach and found a spot along the road to park. We took the less traveled path, navigating through the bushes to reach the beach. And there it was! The Pacific Ocean in the cozy seaside town of Carmel (Carmel-By-The-Sea, if you want to be official!) was as glorious as I had imagined.
I stood on the sand, smelling the freshness of the salty air and watching the waves roll in, feeling so much gratitude for my life. I’m not sure the photos capture the perfect mix of turquoise, navy, and emerald water, but trust me, it was breathtaking!
Carmel Highlands Vista
When cruising the coast, stopping at Carmel Highlands Vista is a must! The view is breathtaking, with the rugged coastline stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s the perfect spot to pull over, stretch your legs, and soak in the beauty of Big Sur.
While you’re there, look for playful sea otters bobbing in the waves. These adorable creatures often float on their backs and crack open shellfish with rocks. We saw a few swimming and playing in the water, but no shellfish cracking! I wish I had some in the photos, but they were quick!
Whether snapping photos or enjoying the moment, Carmel Highlands Vista offers a slice of coastal paradise you won’t want to miss. So take a break, breathe in the salty air, and enjoy the natural wonders of coastal California.
Exploring Nature at Garrapata State Park
Garrapata State Park took my breath away! The magnificent coastal views and the renowned Bluff Trail are ideal for a leisurely hike. It’s a photographer’s paradise, with dramatic cliffs and rock formations perfect for the waves to crash into. We crossed a wooden bridge over Soberanes Creek to see a “surprise” waterfall. Soberanes Falls drops over three tiers to the rocky beach below. This breathtaking destination left me in awe.
If you need to destress and nature is your happy place, this is the place to come! The sounds of the crashing waves and the fresh smell of the sea air will help you find your center again. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Garrapata State Park is the ideal spot to unwind and appreciate the beauty of California’s rugged coastline.
Tip: The parking lot fills up quickly, so arrive early, and don’t forget your camera!
Iconic Views at Bixby Creek Bridge
One of the most iconic stops on the scenic drive through Big Sur is the Bixby Creek Bridge. The bridge was completed in November 1932 during the Great Depression. Its construction provided jobs for hundreds of workers, which was a crucial economic boost to the region at the time.
The bridge has been recognized as a historic civil engineering landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Its unique design and historical importance have earned it a place in both state and national historic registers.
Today, Bixby Creek Bridge is one of the most photographed landmarks along the Pacific Coast. Its graceful arch and the surrounding dramatic scenery make it a favorite for photographers, filmmakers, and visitors. The bridge symbolizes Big Sur’s rugged beauty and is often used to represent the entire area in postcards, movies, and TV shows. It is frequently featured in car commercials and even appeared in the opening credits of the hit TV series Big Little Lies, further cementing its iconic status.
Because of the road closure on Highway 1 (due to a landslide!), the ride was planned to be an out-and-back, giving us the opportunity to stop at the bridge twice. The light was all wrong the first time, and the photo was not inspiring. On the return trip, we stopped again. Fog had rolled in, creating a dramatic view! I found an ideal composition and created a six-image panorama. The image turned out to be one of my favorites from the day.
Valley View Trail in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
The next stop on our adventure was a state park filled with amazing Redwood trees and a “short” hike. If you know us, then you know that any short hike is bound to be much longer (and more strenuous) than we expect. The Valley View Trail was no exception!
What we thought was a .48-mile hike turned into a 2.89-mile hike up a mountain. I thought maybe we were climbing the stairway to heaven with nearly 1000 feet of elevation gained.
Now, I will accept some of the blame for that increase because I suggested a “shortcut” slightly off-trail but on a well-worn path.
It should be noted that this was probably the first, but definitely the last time I suggest a shortcut!
We met several returning hikers who “promised” we were almost there and that it was totally “worth it.” I’ll hike to almost any waterfall based on these promises, but they are all based on user experience, so take them with a grain of salt.
We had been hiking uphill for what seemed like days (probably only about 30 minutes, but…elevation!), and I was ready to get to the viewpoint to see the waterfall.
We met another couple coming back down the path, who asked us about the trail to the falls. We told them we hadn’t gotten there yet. Well, long story short, we ALL had taken that silly shortcut and missed turning to the falls!
Tip: don’t take shortcuts!
The falls weren’t super impressive, but at least they were more than a trickle! We all laughed about our navigational failure and then headed back. Luckily, going down the mountain was much easier (and faster!).
Ending the Day at McWay Falls
One of the “must-see” stops on my list was McWay Falls. There is no beach access to the falls, but the path to the viewpoint was a short hike and provided a decent view. Due to erosion, the trail is closed at the midpoint, so it is even shorter. Plus, you get to go through a tunnel!
Tip: Several of the state parks on this scenic drive require a fee to park, but if you visit more than one, you can use your receipt to access the others!
The falls tumble directly onto the beach, a rare and enchanting sight that feels like discovering a secret whispered by the earth. The falls start about 3,000 feet up in the rugged mountains and flow year-round. It was low tide when we were there, but I hear it is beautiful at high tide, too!
McWay Falls was the perfect way to wrap up our day! Who can resist a waterfall that drops 80 feet onto a secluded beach? Not me!
Even though I won’t soon forget the crazy hike in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, my favorite parts of the day all involved the incredible coastline along Highway 1 as we explored Big Sur. Limited parking made riding the motorcycle a perfect choice, but feeling the sea mist on our faces and breathing in the fresh air was a bonus!
From the twisting roads to the towering cliffs and quiet hikes, Big Sur offers an adventure like no other—one that leaves you in awe at every turn. Whether you’re drawn by the ocean’s beauty or the serenity of the redwoods, this stretch of California’s Highway 1 is a reminder of nature’s power and peace. If you’re craving an unforgettable escape, Big Sur is waiting to take your breath away.
