The Quirky Charm of Wall Drug: A Must-Visit Roadside Attraction

Building, Store, cars, sidewalk, sky

Located in the heart of South Dakota, Wall Drug is more than just a pit stop; it’s an adventure, a tradition, and a testament to the power of roadside attractions. Whether you’re a road trip veteran or a curious traveler, Wall Drug is a destination that promises fun, history, and a splash of the unexpected. So, buckle up, and let’s explore what makes this quirky gem a must-visit on your travel itinerary!

From Humble Beginnings to Legendary Status

Wall Drug’s story began in 1931, during the Great Depression. Ted Hustead and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Wall, South Dakota, and bought a small drugstore with an inheritance Ted had received after his father passed away. Business was slow—until Dorothy had a stroke of genius: offer free ice water to travelers sweltering in the summer heat. Ted put up signs along the highway advertising this simple, yet effective, refreshment. The result? Travelers flocked to Wall Drug, and the rest is history.

Over the decades, Wall Drug grew from a modest pharmacy into a sprawling complex covering 76,000 square feet. It’s where you can get everything from a cup of five-cent coffee to a pair of cowboy boots. But Wall Drug is more than just a collection of stores; it’s an experience that captures the spirit of American road trips.

The Iconic Signs

Sign, Grass, Field

One of the most iconic features of Wall Drug is its signage. As you drive through South Dakota, you can’t miss the colorful billboards proclaiming the distance to Wall Drug. These signs have become a favorite part of the journey, creating a sense of anticipation and excitement. I know that’s how I felt the first time I encountered the signs and couldn’t wait to see Wall Drug for myself. Unfortunately, that visit would have to wait nearly 7 years!

The tradition of quirky and creative signage continues to this day, with messages ranging from the practical (“Free Ice Water”) to the humorous (“Have You Dug Wall Drug?”). These signs aren’t limited to South Dakota; you can also find them worldwide, from the London Underground to Morrocco and Amsterdam. Each sign is a testament to Wall Drug’s global appeal and its knack for capturing the imaginations of travelers everywhere.

The Attractions: More Than Just a Drugstore

Wall Drug is a veritable smorgasbord of attractions, offering something for everyone. Here are some of the highlights you won’t want to miss:

The Jackalope

No visit to Wall Drug is complete without a photo op on the giant jackalope. This mythical creature—a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope—has become one of Wall Drug’s most famous residents. Climb aboard, strike a pose, and join the ranks of countless visitors who have made this whimsical statue a part of their Wall Drug experience.

The Backyard

Wall Drug’s backyard is a playground for kids and adults alike. From the roaring T-Rex that comes to life every 12 minutes to the splash-worthy mining experience, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Kids can pan for gold or take a ride on the mining-themed train. My favorite was the Mt. Rushmore replica!

Art Gallery

For those seeking a quieter moment, Wall Drug offers an impressive art gallery featuring Western and Americana art. The gallery includes works by renowned artists like Western painter L. A. Huffman. I loved all the photos! It was so interesting to see some dated in the 1800’s and to see the history of Wall Drug!
